3D Segments

First Time Visiting? Click here....
This is a collection of Strava segments that are found within the Greenbelt in Ottawa:
  • Click on the blog post, or the Read More caption to see detailed maps and a description of the segment
  • The segments are not being presented for the express purpose of KOM hunting, but rather in order to highlight some novel and interesting options for urban exploration.
  • Before attempting any of these segments, please review our thoughts on safety and our disclaimer on land use that can be found here: MostlySafe
  • There's at least 3 of pages of segments here- navigation at bottom of page will allow you to toggle back and forth. Howie has 1400+ segments on VeloViewer to comb through, so more will be added over time.

In the Central Experimental Farm just off McCooeye Lane, is this little climb that you can pretty much try to rip up anytime, because there's never really anyone on it and there are no obstacle's to navigate.

Location: Hydro Road between Conroy and Albion
www.strava.com/segments/13757345

Running parallel to Walkley from Conroy to Albion, this segment of Hydro road is handy for connecting to a variety of routes. Here are a couple of examples:
www.strava.com/routes/2834134702407759590
www.strava.com/routes/2804911774536107280

It's essentially a pair of gravel tire tracks with almost no elevation change and zig-zags ever so mildly. In high summer when the grass is high, you have to point your bike at the tracks and just go with it, because you can really only see a few feet in front of you. At the Albion end they do mow it occasionally and it's wide and open.

There used to be a gate at the Conroy end with a no-dumping sign, but its down right now. Either way, this is part of the Hydro corridor that has multiple sections that have soccer fields and pathways that runs pretty much from the Queensway at Walkley and ends at South Keys, before it picks up again at McCarthy Woods.

Location: Sir George-Etienne-Cartier Parkway near the Aviation Museum
www.strava.com/segments/5858042

The area that used to be Rockcliffe Air Force Base is presently under heavy development and will turn into a subdivision over time. Right now though, there's a ton of awesome places to ride and one way in and out of the area is the Col de Polaris.

Location: Albion/Lester to South Keys

There's an amazing system of Greenbelt Trails in Pine Grove Forest, which is more or less located in a large area between Ramsayville Road and Albion Road.

Getting to and from these trails can be a chore, however, especially the idea of riding down Albion Road or Ramsayville to get to the trailheads on your off-road bike. This is at least one solution to that problem. We also detail this in the route for Howie's Roubaix.

Location: Mer Bleue at end of Dolman Ridge Road
https://www.strava.com/segments/27278933

Just off Anderson Road, about a kilometer down Dolman Ridge Road, is a gate. On the other side of that gate is a paved road that gradually begins to deteriorate into gravel and eventually swings hard left into a field.

Location: Rockliffe Road, off Lisgar Road in Rockliffe
https://www.strava.com/segments/27279005

So.....this is right next to the US Ambassadors residence. Sometimes there is an RCMP car parked at the beginning of this segment. I've seen it when passing by on my road bike heading to the parkway, and once heading up this segment. The officer waved back on that occasion, so that's a good sign.

Location: Billings Estate near Bank/Riverside

I love this hill. It's near my house and it's fun to cross Billing's Bridge and then get onto this climb right at the start of a ride. Baron Von Tippetham pointed it out one day and the first time we explored the area was during a run.

Location: McCooeye Lane, Experimental Farm
https://www.strava.com/segments/18541653

This gravel section in the Experimental Farm is completely exposed, so wind is always a factor on some portion of this U-shaped climb. It's not steep at all with an average gradient of 1% but it's harder than you might expect.

Location: Arboretum near Hartwell Locks
https://www.strava.com/segments/14824656

Back in 1994 when Frankenbike was new and still a mountain bike, I used to ride this hill in the Arboretum over and over again as cross-training for running. I've started riding it a lot again as of late and it hasn't changed a bit.
