3D Segments

First Time Visiting? Click here....
This is a collection of Strava segments that are found within the Greenbelt in Ottawa:
  • Click on the blog post, or the Read More caption to see detailed maps and a description of the segment
  • The segments are not being presented for the express purpose of KOM hunting, but rather in order to highlight some novel and interesting options for urban exploration.
  • Before attempting any of these segments, please review our thoughts on safety and our disclaimer on land use that can be found here: MostlySafe
  • There's at least 3 of pages of segments here- navigation at bottom of page will allow you to toggle back and forth. Howie has 1400+ segments on VeloViewer to comb through, so more will be added over time.

If you ride without rhythm you won't attract the worms

About a billion years ago a glacier dragged it's arse across the Mer Bleue area and dropped piles of sand along the way as it headed west. The result is that as you follow the Greenbelt Pathways from Ramsayville all the way to Woodroffe you get to ride through soft, sometimes sandy trails surrounded by tall pine trees. The pines seem to really dig this soil.
Nowhere is this more beautifully presented than in Pinhey Forest. I'm sure there's more than one way to gain entry to the forest when heading north from the Greenbelt Trail that starts way back at Prince of Wales and ends at Woodroffe (see that segment as well), but after 3 tries my best experience was entering the trails through Grenfell Glen Park. I ended up creating a segment just so I could highlight how to get there- I used a Dune reference, so I hope the new movie doesn't suck.

The crazy thing about this area is not just how nice the trails are, with single-track going off in all directions, but found in the middle of the woods in 3 or 4 different places are large sand dunes. Some of them are acres in size, the biggest being on the north side of Slack Road.

The riding in here is glorious and once you get your fill you can hop across Slack Road and access the trail system in behind the Nepean Sportsplex. Whereas I always run into others on the trails behind the Sportsplex, I have seen relatively few people in Pinhey's Forest to the South of Slack. This is especially true on the trails that ring the area to the south of the dunes themselves. Well worth the effort to ride here.
