First Time Visiting? Click here....
This is a collection of Strava segments that are found within the Greenbelt in Ottawa:
  • Click on the blog post, or the Read More caption to see detailed maps and a description of the segment
  • The segments are not being presented for the express purpose of KOM hunting, but rather in order to highlight some novel and interesting options for urban exploration.
  • Before attempting any of these segments, please review our thoughts on safety and our disclaimer on land use that can be found here: MostlySafe
  • There's at least 3 of pages of segments here- navigation at bottom of page will allow you to toggle back and forth. Howie has 1400+ segments on VeloViewer to comb through, so more will be added over time.

Ski Hill Skibabble

Location: Ski Hill Park, Gloucester off Ogilvie near Montreal Rd.

Is "Naskapi Ridge Park really a park, or is it 100 backyards? I don't know but it's fun as hell to ride and the drop down Ski Hill Park is a fast, straight shot, well, down an old ski hill I guess.

Listen to "I wish" by Skee-Lo and see if you can hear him say skip-skibabble. Then the segment name will make sense (Ski + Skibabble, clever yo?). In fact that song may have been on the charts when Frankenbike was new, so this delves super deep in terms of meaningful connections.

Anyway....this is a pretty silly strip of green space that's sorta tucked in between some trees as per the photo above. On Google maps the whole thing shows up as Ski Hill Park, but the segment here is basically a 30' wide strip of grass on the side of a ridge (Naskapi Ridge apparently) that meanders northwest towards the river. You aren't technically riding through anyone's backyard, but you can definitely see into a few. There's sort of a path here. It's hard-packed grass and dirt.

The value of sharing it, is that I'm doubting many people know about it and if you happen to find yourself riding in this part of the world, it's mildly amusing. There's a big hill at end of the segment that's wide open, similar to the hill at Mooney's Bay. Do with that as you wish, just note that it's fairly steep and there is a safe bike path that you can ride down if your DH skills are questionable.

If you're a masochist, riding this segment in reverse would be a very solid climb. It rolls up and down a bit anyway in either direction.

There's some other wooded trails connected to the west of the big grass section of Ski Hill Park with a truly gnarly system of valleys. I don't recommend riding those trails. Maybe on a full suspension mountain bike, but even then....

Here's a route that includes this segment to give you some sense of what it links up with. Some of this route is idiotic, so perhaps edit and adjust to your taste: www.strava.com/routes/2837174292769981208
