Summary:
  • Approximate distance: 30km
  • Approximate riding time: 97 minutes
  • Area Covered: Old Ottawa South, loop around Alta Vista/Kilborn/Walkley area
Exploro #2 was really another close-to-home adventure for our crew. The focus of this ride was the Alta Vista area. Here is a rough idea of the route in bullet form:
  • From Brighton Beach Park to Hurdman
  • Across Riverside and up and over the embankment south-east of the Cancer pathway into the "Little League to the Link" segment that runs behind Abbey Road
  • Across Alta Vista Drive and climb up and over the Hospital link hydro road until you can exit on Peter Morand
  • Due south across Smyth into the pathways/greenspace that connects the hospital and Walkley Road- gravel road between Pleasant Park and Kilborn- far left grass trail from Kilborn to Walkley
  • The hydro road heading west between Conroy and Albion (High Voltage segment)
  • Through the Walkley arena parking lot across the fields behind Ridgemont High
  • Across the soccer fields at Heron into Orlando Park
  • Orlando Park system to Heron Corridor heading north
  • Across Kilborn into Grasshopper Hill Park straight down to Cunningham
  • Loop through Cunningham Park (see Clever Pig Park segment)
  • Back to Grasshopper Hill turning first left to take you to Pleasant Park Woods
  • Across fields at Pleasant Park school to Lynda Lane
  • Back to Hospital- onto hydro road and back down to start of Little League to the Link.
  • Left onto Riverside, left into Corsica Private, down to bridge over transitway
  • Back through Hurdman to whatever route takes you home.

There is a lot of riding on grass in this route. Like a lot. 30km looks short, but the pace on this terrain is a bit of a crawl. At least it is on Frankenbike. I suspect a cross bike could be quicker. Still it took 90 minutes total for the group to navigate this, with one hour of moving time.

As always, this was a game of follow the leader and this route had a lot of turns to keep people awake. We had 8 people out, which was just about perfect.

Give it a shot and have fun. Route file for your bike computer can be downloaded below.
